Who We Are

Trans United Fund is committed to building the political power of trans and gender expansive communities and our allies to advocate for trans equality.

Trans United Fund accomplishes this mission through engaging trans and gender expansive people and our allies in the political process, building the political leadership and capacity of trans people and allies, and endorsing candidates with a commitment to our communities and a pro-trans platform.

Candidates seeking the support of Trans United Fund must go above and beyond support for basic issues of LGBTQ equality, such as supporting inclusive non-discrimination measures. Candidates must demonstrate a strong and proactive commitment to tackling issues like HIV/AIDS, immigration, violence, unemployment, and healthcare disparities, which disproportionately impact trans and gender expansive communities.

We’re leading DC Choice, a coalition of local organizations and leaders that support racial, gender, economic, and environmental justice in DC. We’ve endorsed Democrats Jeremiah Lowery for D.C. Council (At-large) and Ed Lazere for Council Chair, and are supporting the One Fair Wage Ballot initiative, which will raise the tipped minimum wage to $15/hour so all workers receive the same minimum wage.

An Opportunity to Build Power for Our Communities

Trans United Fund is building a unified political voice for trans and gender expansive people and our allies in Washington, D.C.

2018 presents major opportunities for building a united front on the left in D.C. By building a multi-racial, cross-class coalition of new, lower propensity, and progressive high propensity voters across different identities, TU-F can put a comprehensive agenda for justice and equity front and center in D.C. politics, helping elect trans allies and building long term political power for trans communities and communities of color in Washington, D.C.

DC is at a turning point, where we have a choice: to continue down the current path where displacement, homelessness, and police violence are all too common, or to face these urgent problems with real, impactful, progressive solutions. Trans United Fund is bringing together support for the issues that matter most for our communities-racial and economic justice, housing and homelessness, police violence, sex work, immigration, and other key issues. We’ll be organizing in DC and endorsing candidates who understand that D.C. is at a turning point, and that we can choose to be a city where all our residents thrive and are provided for, or a playground for developers that displaces long-time black and brown residents.

You can pledge to vote early for our candidates here, and find out your polling place here.

Our Endorsed Candidates

We’ve endorsed Jeremiah Lowery for At-large Council and Ed Lazere for Council Chair in the Democratic Primary on June 19th. We’re working to help elect them as part of DC Choice, a grassroots coalition of local progressive groups. Both Ed and Jeremiah support:

  • Doubling D.C.’s investment in affordable housing for low-income residents and families.
  • Universal Childcare
  • Expanding Tenant rights.
  • Affordable housing and safe shelter for seniors, low-income residents, and LGBTQ folks, including the 50% of homeless youth who identify as LGBTQ.
  • Paid family leave, a policy they both helped pass and have promised to protect from big business attempts to repeal and replace D.C.’s strong paid family and medical leave law.
  • Decriminalizing sex work to ensure that sex workers can seek access to services without fear of being criminalized.

We are also supporting the Yes on 77 campaign, which will raise the minimum wage to $15 for tipped workers gradually between now and 2025. Tipped workers are more likely to experience sexual harassment, more likely to live in poverty, and often experience wage theft at the hands of employers than non-tipped workers. Find out more here.

Both Ed and Jeremiah support the Yes on 77 campaign, while their opponents oppose it and have not committed to respect the will of the people if Initiative 77 passes. Vote Yes on Initiative 77 and for Ed and Jeremiah!
